Fort Antoine Theatre - 50th Anniversary

Fort Antoine Theatre - 50th Anniversary

BASED ON A WORK BY THOMAS BERNHARD, WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY NICOLAS BOUCHAUD. DIRECTED BY ÉRIC DIDRY, IN COLLABORATION WITH VÉRONIQUE TIMSIT. OTTO / THÉÂTRE GARONNE.

Fort Antoine is set to host the cultural highlight of the summer in the Principality. The traditional venue for summer events, this year the site will be celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of its open-air theatre. To mark the occasion, the Prince’s Government is offering a series of free public performances, subject to available places (to book, please contact the Princess Grace Theatre ticket office*).

As part of the fiftieth anniversary celebrations, the Department of Cultural Affairs is organising two distinct special programmes. The Principality’s iconic cultural institutions will be in the spotlight from 8 July to 7 August, while the traditional theatre season will resume from 18 August to 4 September 2020.

The story takes place entirely in a room of the Museum of Art History in Vienna. In this acerbic comedy, Atzbacher, the narrator, has an appointment with the old Reger, a music critic who, for the last thirty years, has been allowed by the museum's security guard Irrsigler, to sit on his "reserved bench" in the Bordone room, opposite the Tintoretto painting "Man with a White Beard". Atzbacher arrives an hour early to watch his friend Reger, who was recently widowed.

Nicolas Bouchaud, alone on stage in this adaptation of Thomas Bernhard's 1985 novel, offers us an uninterrupted monologue with the voices of solitary, misanthropic characters. It is a non-exhaustive critique of Austria, great figures including Beethoven and Heidegger, but also a musing on the meaning of transmission, grief, and heritage. Fascinating, frightening, but very funny.
