“In this fierce tale, Molière blends different dramatic genres: Gallic farce, social critique, comedy of manners, furious tragedy... all swept along by Lully's clever score. This musical satire is forged in contrast, with the vernacular mixing with more refined, noble language. Molière's contention is that marriage is a transaction in which love plays no part - since in marrying Angélique de Sotenville, Dandin has merely traded his fortune for a title - though the groom nonetheless strives to claim his wife's love and fidelity. Dandin represents the commercial bourgeoisie, made to look foolish by the ruined nobility, but also by his grotesque valets and above all - by himself!” Michel Fau.
